How to choose splitboard! Hvordan velge splitboard!

This season we get questions from people who want help to choose a splitboard.

So here is a couple of tips. If you like more help or want to try splitboarding, contact us.

When looking into buying a splitboard there is a couple of things to think trough first.

How do you ride, type terrain, type snow, weight & price.

There are different categories for boards, all have their own advantages & qualities.

Let´s say powder, freestyle, freeride & all-mountain. If you want your splitboard to perform best in one of these categories look for a splitboard in that specific category. All boards can be ridden in all conditions & all terrain, but will perform best in the category it´s made for. To find the category for your splitboard go trough what advantages & qualities you like for your board. Also price & weight are something to think about! The best would be to have a quiver with some splitboards for different snow conditions & terrain, but for most riders it´s enough to have one splitboard for all days.

Powder: Powder boards are directional, short & wide for float in powder. They normally have a powder camber-rocker combo profile & are made to float in powder & can give you a surf style totally different from other boards.

They are good for hiking in soft snow conditions, up to medium+ terrain & day trips.

Medium to hike on variable snow conditions & side traverses.

They ride good in soft snow, up to medium+ terrain & goodfloat in powder.

Medium+ to ride in variable conditions

Freestyle: Freestyle boards are twin, short & have centered stance to ride easier both ways. They normally have a camber or camber-rocker combo profile, are made to easier do tricks, give stability in the air on jumps, tricks & butters.

Freestyle Camber-Rocker combo profile:

They are good for hiking in soft snow conditions, up to medium+ terrain & day trips.

Medium to hike on variable snow conditions & side traverses.

They ride good in all snow conditions, up to medium+ terrain & medium float in powder.

Medium to ride in variable conditions.

Freestyle Camber profile:

They are good for hiking in all snow conditions, up to medium+ terrain & day trips.

Medium to hike side traverses.

They ride good in all snow conditions, up to medium+ terrain, but gives low float in powder.

Medium+ to ride in variable conditions.

Freeride: Freeride boards are directional, stiff & have wider nose than tail for float in powder. They normally have a camber profile, some with early rise nose, are made to be stable on variable conditions in high speed, float in powder & stable in landings.

They are good for hiking all snow conditions, all terrain & longer trips.

They ride good in all snow conditions, all terrain & medium+ float in powder.

All mountain: All mountain boards are directional twin or directional, medium flex & perform all over the mountain. They normally have a rocker-camber combo profile, are made to perform on all conditions & all terrain, easy to do tricks & butters with. Most snowboarders ride all-mountain boards, they work for powder, freeride & freestyle.

They are good for hiking in soft snow conditions, up to medium+ terrain & day trips.

Medium to hike on variable snow conditions & side traverses.

They ride good in all snow conditions, up to medium+ terrain & medium+ float in powder.

Medium+ to ride in variable conditions.

If you like a playful board for all conditions, choosing the all-mountain category is a good option.

If you like a board for best float in powder, choosing the powder category is a good option.

If you like a board for jumps & tricks, choosing the freestyle category is a good option.

If you like a stable board for riding & hiking in all conditions & all terrain choosing the freeride category is a good option.

All boards can be ridden in all conditions & all terrain, but will perform best in the category it´s made for.

Board shapes:

Let´s say directional, twin & directional twin.

Directional: Made to ride one specific way. Normally freeride or all-mountain boards.

Twin: Made to ride both ways, have the same nose & tail. Normally freestyle boards.

Directional twin: Made to ride one way, have almost the same nose & tail. Normally all-mountain boards.

Board profiles:

Let´s say camber, rocker, rocker-camber combo, camber-rocker combo, powder camber-rocker combo, flat & flat-rocker.

Camber: The board bends upwards in the middle from the ground.

Hard to ride, catchy edges, stiff, stable at speed in turns & variable conditions.

Low float in powder.

Rocker: (reversed camber)The board bends down in the middle. So the nose & tail comes up.

Easy to ride, forgiving, soft flex, low stability at speed & in variable conditions.

Good float in powder.

Rocker-camber combo: (Hybrid) The board has rocker in the middle & camber under feet.

So it bends down in the middle & up under the feet.

Easy to ride, forgiving, medium flex, medium+ stable at speed & variable conditions.

Medium+ float in powder.

Camber-rocker combo: (Hybrid) The board has camber in the middle & rocker at nose & tail.

So it goes up from the ground in the middle, & tip & tail bends up.

Easy to ride, medium forgiving, medium flex, medium+ stable at speed & variable conditions. Medium+ float in powder.

Powder camber-rocker combo: This board are flat or camber in the middle & rocker at nose & tail. So it bends up in tip & tail.

Easy to ride, medium forgiving, medium flex, medium stable at speed & variable conditions.

Good float in powder.

Flat: The board is flat to the ground.

Hard to ride, catchy edges, medium flex, medium stable at speed & variable conditions.

Low+ float in powder.

Flat-rocker: The board is flat in the middle & rocker nose & tail.

So it bends up in tip & tail.

Easy to ride, medium forgiving, soft flex, medium stable at speed & variable conditions.

Medium float in powder

Flex:

Soft boards are easier to ride, better for beginners & playful.

Hard boards are harder to ride, more stable at high speed & variable conditions.

Splitboards come in a wide variety of weights, some can be up to twice as heavy as others. Do some research on board weight can be smart. A light board will make hiking much more comfortable.

For hiking a camber board gives better traction in the skin track & on variable snow conditions then a rocker board because of the presser points on the board.

Binding crampons make hiking on icy & variable snow conditions allot easier by sticking into the ground on each footstep.

Splitboards come in different price categories, some brands are much cheaper than others. Do some research before buying can be smart.

NO:

All mountain: All mountain brett er directional twin eller directional, medium flex og presterer over hele fjellet.

Normalt freestyle brett.

Normalt all-mountain brett.

Brett profiler: La oss si camber, rocker, rocker-camber combo, camber-rocker combo, powder camber-rocker combo, flat & flat-rocker. Vanskelig å kjøre, catchy kanter, stiv, stabil i høy fart i svinger & variable snøforhold.

Low flyt i pudder. Rocker: (reversert camber) Brettet bøyer seg ned i midten slik at nose & tail kommer opp. Lett å kjøre, tilgivende, myk flex, lav stabilitet i høy fart & på variable snøforhold.

Bra flyt i pudder.

Medium+ flyt i pudder.

Medium+ flyt i pudder.

Bra flyt i pudder. Flat: Brettet er flatt mot bakken. Vanskelig å kjøre, catchy kanter, medium flex, medium stabil i høy fart & på variable snøforhold.

Low+ flyt i pudder. Lett å kjøre, medium tilgivende, myk flex, medium stabil i høy fart & variable snøforhold.

Medium flyt i pudder.
